What Happens During a Pest Control Visit?

A technician asks what you've seen, inspects inside and out, treats the problem areas and entry points, and explains any follow-up. Clear access to baseboards, cabinets and the outside walls makes the visit quicker.

Before the visit

Note where and when you see pests. Clear under sinks and around baseboards in affected rooms, and put pets somewhere safe.

The inspection

The technician looks for signs of activity, entry points, moisture and food sources inside and around the house.

The treatment

Exterior treatments target the foundation, entry points and eaves. Indoors, baits and targeted products go into cracks and voids rather than broad spraying.

Questions to ask

What product was used, how long to keep people and pets off treated areas, and when to expect results.

Afterwards

You may see more insects for a few days as they're flushed out. Avoid cleaning treated areas until the technician says it's fine.

Follow-up

Many treatments need a return visit. See general pest control.

How soon will it work?

Some products act within hours; baits can take days or weeks because they work through the colony. Ask what timeline to expect for your pest.

Keep a record

Note the date, products and what was treated. It helps if problems return and is useful when you sell the house.

Costs and plans

The technician should explain what the visit includes and whether a follow-up or a regular plan is recommended, with prices, before treating.

Between visits

Keep doing the basics: seal gaps, fix leaks and store food sealed. Treatments work better when pests have fewer reasons to come back.

Rentals

If you rent, share the visit report with your landlord so the treatment is on record.

Pets

Ask how long pets should stay off treated floors and lawns.
